Griezman misses out as FIFA World XI unveiled

Antoine Griezmann, who finished in third place for the main award, had another superb calendar year on an individual level

Athletico Madrid’s star Antoine Griezman missed put of the FIFPRO World XI 2016 though he placed 3rd behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in the FIFA Best Player Award.

The French attacker was the main man when Athletico eliminated their Spanish rivals FC Barcelona and German champions Bayern Munich in the quarter and semi finals of the UEFA Champions League respectively. The Rojiblancos went on to loose to City rivals Real Madrid on penalty shoot out in the finals.

Griezman also won the player of the tournament when France lost narrowly to Portugal in the Euro 2016 final.

The FIFPRO XI is selected from votes cast by Professional Footballers across the world.

At the FIFA awards held in Zurich yesterday, the FIFPRO World eleven was announced and below is the squad.

GOALKEEPER: Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich / Germany)

DEFENDERS: Dani Alves (Barcelona and Juventus / Brazil), Gerard Pique (Barcelona / Spain), Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid / Spain) and Marcelo (Real Madrid /Brazil)

MIDFIELDERS: Luka Modric (Real Madrid / Croatia), Toni Kroos (Real Madrid / Germany), Andres Iniesta (Barcelona / Spain)

FORWARDS: Lionel Messi (Barcelona / Argentina), Luis Suarez (Barcelona / Uruguay), Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid / Portugal)

FC Barcelona’s contingent failed to turn up as they chose to concentrate on their second leg Copa Del Rey clash against Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday.

Andres Iniesta captain for the Catalan side released a video to apologise to FIFA and football world for their inability to attend.
