The matchweek 22 of the English Premier League ended in a fascinating fashion as league leaders, Chelsea extended their lead at the top of the table to eight points.
Chelsea welcomed relegation threaten, Hull City to Stamford Bridge and despite a spirited performance from the Tigers, Chelsea won 2-0 to extend their lead at the top on a weekend four of the top six dropped points. Manager Antonio Conte described Chelsea’s performance as below average but were able to count on goals from Diego Costa and captain, Gary Cahill to ensure they did not slip this weekend. Chelsea now has 55 points and on four occasions has a team won 55 points after 22 round of games with Chelsea recording three (2004/2005, 2005/2006, 2016/2017) of the four. On all occasions the previous three has amassed these points, they have gone to lift the trophy come May.
Arsenal needed a late penalty goal from Alexis Sanchez, his 15th in the Premier League to beat Burnley 2-1 in a game that was marred by controversies. Shrokdan Mustafi’s goal in the 55th minute was cancelled in additional time by Andy Gray’s penalty but a late penalty was all needed to send Arsenal to 2nd on the PL log with 47 points to show off.
Swansea City beat Liverpool for the first time in the Premier League at Anfield thanks to a match winning goal from Gylfi Sidgursson after Roberto Firmino’s brace has cancelled Fernando Llorente’s early brace.
WestHam United beat Middlesbrough 3-1 with Andy Carroll scoring a brace with Stoke City sharing the spoils with Manchester United in a game Wayne Rooney achieved a milestone of becoming Manchester United’s all time topscorer. WestBromich Albion won 2-0 against Sunderland, AFC Bournemouth drew 2-2 with Watford at the Dean Court and it was a late Seamus Coleman’s goal that ensured Everton beat Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park to move to 7th on the table after 22 round of games.
Manchester City took a two goal advantage but could not capitalize on that as they drew 2-2 with in-form Tottenham Hostspurs at Etihad. The draw puts Spurs 3rd with 46 points and three ahead of City who lies 5th after 22 games. Southampton increased Liecester City woes as they beat them 3-0 to ensure they go into their English Football League semi final second leg with confidence.
