The 2017 Australian Open Women’s final saw two sisters lock horns as Serena Williams played her senior sister, Venus Williams in a dramatic fashion at Rod Laver Arena.
Venus 35 met her younger sister, Serena 33 at the Aussie Open final after explicable performances from the two sisters at the first Grand Sl of the year.
Serena has beaten her sister in their last 5 meetings and made her superiority count as she won the first set 6-4. Venus made a fantastic start to the second set but it was Serena who prevailed 6-4 to win the second set.
Serena couldn’t hide her joy as she sat on the court with arms high after beating her elder sister 6-4, 6-4 to claim her 7th Australian Open title.
With the 2017 Aussie Open title, Serena now has 23 Grand Slam title surpassing Staff Grafl open era record of 22 and now one short of Margaret Court in the Women’s division who has 24.
Serena now has won 7 Australian Open titles, 7 Wimbledon titles, 6 US open titles and 3 French Open titles.
Venus Williams was very happy for her younger sister as she couldn’t stop praising her after the game.
She said “I have been right there with you and some of the time I’ve lost them right there with you – sounds weird, but it’s true”
“I’m enormously proud of you. God willing I would love to come back.”
Serena Williams was all praise for her elder sister as she said “I would like to take this moment to congratulate Venus. She’s an amazing person – she’s my inspiration. She’s made an amazing comeback and I don’t like the word comeback – she’s never left.
“I’m trying to stay up here as long as possible because I missed it last year.
“I love you, thank you.”
Serena Williams will need two more Grand Slam wins (Roland Garros up next) to become the all time Grand Slam holder in the Women’s division as he is one short of Margaret Court’s all time record of 24 Grand Slam wins.
