AFCON 2017: Heartbreak to Senegal as Burkina Faso matches on

Senegal hopes of winning their first AFCON in their nation’s history was brought to an end by their nemesis Cameroon.

Cameroon has always had an advantage over Senegal in AFCON and also proved their superiority as they beat the Teranga Lions 5-4 on penalties after a goalless drawn game.

Senegal recounted the 2002 final when they lost to Cameroon on penalties in the final game and was in to make amends this year when they met the Indomitable Lions at the quarter final stage.

There were chances to score than to miss that befell Senegal but wasted opportunities by the frontline of Senegal and goalkeeping masterclass of Cameroon goalkeeper, Fabrice Ondoa ensured there was nothing to separate the two sidess after the regulation time. Extra time was up next and despite chances going each other way, the game ended 0-0 thus a penalty shootout to separate the sides.

Cameroon prevailed 5-4 on penalties after Liverpool and most expensive African player, Saido Mane’s penalty was saved by Total Man of the Match winner, Fabrice Ondoa. There was heartbreaks and tears as Alou Cisse’s men who many has tipped to win the AFCON bows out in a cruel and dramatic style.

The first quarter final game of the 2017 AFCON saw Burkina Faso run out 2-0 winners against Tunisia.

The West African side scored both goals in the last 10mins of the game as goals from Aristide Bance and Prejuce Nkoluma ensured Burkina Faso reached the semi final yet again for the second time in 4 years.

Cameroon and Burkina Faso are in the semi finals and will await the winners of DR Congo and Ghana and Egypt versus Morocco respectively.
