The third place match of the 2017 Total African Cup of Nations held in Gabon saw Burkina Faso beat Ghana 1-0 late in the game to claim bronze.
The Stallions scored from a freekick adjacent to the box in the 89th minute through Alain Traore.
Ghana’s head coach, Avram Grant handed debut starts to Bernard Tekpetey, Ebenezer Ofori among others in a six changes to the lineup that was beaten by Cameroon last Thursday. Paulo Duarte in the dugout for Burkina Faso made just a change to the last lineup that lost to Egypt on penalties as Alain Traore came in.
Ghana started on the front foot and should have gone ahead but as it was against the Indomitable Lions, they squandered all these chances. Andy Yiadom, who was making his second app for Ghana was lively so as debutant Ebenezer Ofori.
Ghana went into the break 0-0 but could feel they should have been up by a goal. The second game began in the same fashion but this time, the Burkinabes were slightly on top as Avram Grant made all his required subs to ensure Ghana score what will be the match winning goal.
As the search continued, it was the Stallions who broke the deadlock in the 89th minute from an Alain Traore’s well taken freekick. The Lorient forward scored from close range though many could be said of Ghana’s goalkeeper, Richard Ofori not able to do something about it but in the end it was the Stallions who finished third and claimed bronze at the AFCON 2017.
