Manchester has won the English Football League trophy/the League Cup trophy with a 3-2 win over Southampton as a last gasp header from Zlatan Ibrahimovic secures the Red devils their first title of the season.
Southampton managed by Claude Puel started on a front foot and had a goal wrongly disallowed for offside when Manolo Gabbiadini scored from close range. Replays shown assistant referee 1 had it wrong.
Manchester United took the lead when Ibrahimovic scored from a freekick in the 19th minute beating goalkeeper Fraser Foster at the far end.
Southampton pressed for a second but it was Manchester United who doubled their lead with a deft goal from Jesse Lingard in the 35th minute. Manolo Gabbiadini reduced the deficit with in the 45th minute after a low cross from Nathan Redmond was turned in by the Italian.
Gabbiadini scored his second bringing Southampton level with Manchester United in the 49th minute. The South coast club could have scored the third as Oriol Romeu’s header from Jamie Ward-Prowse’s corner saw the latter hit the upright.
Both sides pressed for the winner but it was Ibrahimovic who headed home from Ander Herrera’s cross in the 88th minute as he was unmarked to give the red side of Manchester their first trophy this season.
Referee of the day, Andre Marriner brought proceedings to a close as celebrations was the order of the day for Manchester United.
The domestic trophy win means José Mourinho, manager of Manchester United had won all finals he has been in England dating back to 2005. He has won four League cup trophies and an FA Cup trophy, with three of the League cup trophies and the FA Cup coming during his days at Stamford Bridge.
