18th Grand Slam winner, Roger Federer will play Rafael Nadal at the fourth round of the 2017 BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells after beating American Steve Johnson 7-6 7-6.
The Swiss will face Nadal who beat fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco 6-3 7-5.
This will be the 36th meeting between the pair with their 35th meeting coming in the Australian Open Final when Federer beat Nadal in five sets to win his 18th Grand Slam title.
Federer was excited to meet his old rival at Indian Wells and is quoted as saying;
“That’s why I came here, to play against guys like Rafa.”
“I try to see it really as another opportunity to build upon something for the rest of the season.
“So regardless of Australia, winning or losing, I’m going to try to go out there and play free again. I think it’s really important.”
Federer will face Nadal in a mouth watering Round of 16 tie at the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells.
