18 Grand Slam Champion, Rodger Federer has won his fifth BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells after beating fellow Swiss Stan Wawrinka 6-4 7-5.
The all-Swiss final saw the Australian Open Champion come top in straight sets to win his fifth BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells.
This was the 23rd meeting between Rodger Federer and world number three Stan Wawrinka with Federer beating Wawrinka for the 20th time.
Wawrinka went 2-0 ahead before Federer bounced back to win three games in a row to claim his fifth title at Indian Wells.
That was Federer’s 90th career title win and has won 13 of the 14 matches he has played in 2017 with six among the top ten players .
Rodger Federer who shed tears after beating his fellow countryman at the end said;
“This has been a fairy tale week.”
“It’s a beautiful feeling. Maybe it’s not as surprising as Australia but it’s still great to back it up by winning in America.”
“It’s a dream start to the year. I have totally exceeded my expectations. It’s been an unbelievable start to the year.”
In the women’s final, Elena Vesnina edged Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-7 (6-8) 7-5 6-4 to claim the title.
It was a remarkable turnaround by Vesnina as she trailed 4-1 in the second set before winning four consecutive games to force a deciding set.
Kuznetsova has now lost three finals at Indian Wells having been runners up in 2007 and 2008.
