The World governing body, FIFA has introduced Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to help curb the wrongs that happen in terms of officiating in football and for the second time was used to correct two wrongs in France’s 2-0 loss to Spain at the Stade de France.
The first VAR was used in France 3-1 win over Italy in September and was also used yesterday.
France took the lead as Antoine Griezmann headed home from close range but the video assistant referee chopped the goal for offside as referee Felix Zwayer gave a freekick with replays showing a correct decision before Spain took the lead through a David Silva’s penalty when Laurent Koscielny was adjudges to have heckled substitute Gerrard Deulofeu in the penalty box.
Spain scored the second through Gerrard Deulofeu and was flagged offside by the assistant referee but the video assistant referee disagrees and was correctly given as Spain won 2-0.
The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) is currently undergoing trial runs, with Fifa president Gianni Infantino keen to employ the system during the World Cup in Russia next year. FIFA Referee Appointment Committee Head, Perluigi Corlina said it will bring sanity to the game and also aids in good officiating.
“If it is verified and it is fair, why not (use VAR)?” France coach Didier Deschamps said. “It changes our football a little.
“It is against us today [Tuesday], but if we have to go through this, it will be the same for everyone.
“Afterwards, without [VAR], it would have been different, but it is the evolution of football. That is how it will be.”
The VAR has also been used at the FIFA Club World Cup and the FA are planning to use it at the third round of the Emirates FA Cup next season.
But we at GhanaMansports.com will like to ask if the VAR is reliable and will help curb the wrong call by referees in matches.
Will the Video Assistant referee help solve the various wrongs in football?
Can it be a reliable tool for good officiating?
Should FIFA accept to use the VAR as referee head, Perluigi Corlina said will help referees and bring sanity to the game?
