The 36th week of the Premier League saw a Friday Night Football as WestHam United hosted Tottenham Hotspurs at the London Stadium.
The Hammers were on a five game winless run in the PL with Spurs on a contrast as they had won all their last five games in the Premier League keeping tabs on league leaders Chelsea in the quest for a Premier League title since 1961.
Mauricio Pochettino men’s were buoyed by the derby win over Arsenal last weekend and started with almost the same squad that beat the Gunners 2-0 with the only change being Kyle Walker replacing Kierran Trippier at right back.
Slaven Bilic on the other hand made two changes to the starting lineup that drew at Stoke City last weekend with a rare start for Jonathan Calleri.
Spurs dominated possession but were denied by the resolute work of the Hammers defence marshalled by Jose Fonte and Winston Reid.
The game ended barren in the first half but the deadlock was to be broken as a shot from Manuel Lanzini swept pass Hugo Lloris in post for Spurs to put the Hammers in front.
Spurs pushed for the equaliser but a resolute Hammers stood firm to record their first PL since March.
The win secures WestHam ticket for next season’s PL, thus avoiding relegation. It also moves them to 9th on the log after 36 round of games played.
Spurs on the other side remain second with 77 points after 35 matches played, 4 adrift of league leaders Chelsea albeit having played a game more.
Chelsea will have to wait to play Middlesbrough on Monday.
