SOUTH AFRICA NAME PROVISIONAL SQUAD FOR COSAFA CUP

South Africa have named their provisional squad for the 2017 Cosafa Cup, with the defending champions set to enter the fray in the quarterfinal stage.

The annual regional competition kicks off this weekend in Rustenburg with group stage matches.

Hosts and four-time champions Bafana Bafana will face the winners of Group A (one of Angola, Malawi, Tanzania and Mauritius) in the quarterfinals on July 2.

Coach Stuart Baxter has named a squad dominated by players based in the PSL, though the likes of Liam Jordan and Lebogang Phiri play their club football in Europe.

South Africa won last year’s Cosafa Cup in Namibia after defeating Botswana in the final.

Provisional SA squad:

Goalkeepers: Darren Johnson (Ajax Cape Town), Bruce Bvuma (Kaizer Chiefs), Baolefa Pule (SuperSport United)

Defenders: Thendo Mukumela (Mamelodi Sundowns), Sandile Mthethwa (Orlando Pirates), Mothobi Mvala (Highlands Park), Mario Booysen (SuperSport United), Tercious Malepe (Orlando Pirates), Innocent Maela (Thanda Royal Zulu), Lorenzo Gordinho (Kaizer Chiefs)

Midfielders: Thabo Cele (Real Clubbe FC), Lebogang Maboe (Maritzburg United), Sibongakonke Mbatha (Bidvest Wits), Nduduzo Sibiya (Golden Arrows), Mandla Masango (SuperSport United), Lehlohonolo Masalesa (Larrissa), Lebogang Phiri (EA Guingamp), Aubrey Ngoma (Cape Town City)

Strikers: Liam Jordan (Sporting Lisbon), Judas Moseamedi (Cape Town City)
