A 34th minute penalty from Elias Hernandez was enough for the El Tri of Mexico to beat the Black Stars of Ghana 1-0 in Houston.
The Black Stars of Ghana managed now by Katakyie Dr. James Akwasi Appiah was playing his second game in his re-return to the senior national side.
Mexico mainstream team are in the semi finals of the FIFA Confederations Cup and are scheduled to play Germany tonight in Moscow but have a second team preparing for the Gold Cup scheduled to start next week in America.
Kwasi Appiah started with almost the same players that beat Ethiopia 5-0 in Kumasi in the African Cup of Nations qualifier making just three changes to the lineup. Debutant Isaac Sackey came in with Majeed Waris and Frank Acheampong replacing Andre Ayew, Asamoah Gyan and Thomas Teye Partey who were excused from the friendly due to letters written by their respective clubs.
Ghana started on the front foot but were to be undone by their lack of killer instinct upfront as a penalty was awarded to Mexico for a foul in the Black Stars box. Elias Hernandez stood up beating Richard Ofori in post for the Stars.
Ghana continued in search of the equaliser but was not to be as they lost 1-0 to the Latin Americans.
Ghana will play United States on Saturday in the second friendly in the 2017 US Tour as the Latin Americans prepare for the Gold Cup.
