ETHIOPIA CUP: WOLAITTA DICHA BEAT DEFENCE FORCE 4-2 ON PENALTIES

The final of the Ethiopian Cup was played over the weekend with record holders and defending champion, Defence Force losing 4-2 on penalties to Wolaitta Dicha.

Wolaitta Dicha who was formed in 2009, beat Defence Force 4-2 to lift their first ever Ethiopian Cup after a 1-1 drawn game in regulation time. The victory means Dicha becomes the first club since 1997 from the Sodo township to win the Ethiopian trophy.

Defence Force took the lead from a Mubarak Shekuri ‘s own goal in the 21st minute after their high pressing and held on to finish the half 1-0. Wolaitta Dicha came in strongly in the second half and created more chances from the onset but was gnashing their teeth due to poor finishing upfront.

Dicha finally equalised after a penalty was awarded to them for a foul on Badege by Defence Force’s goalkeeper, Yidnekachew Kidane in the box. Dicha captain, Alazar Fasika took the kick sending the goalkeeper the wrong way on the 55th minute. Both sides created chances but finished at 1-1 after regulation time.

The penalties saw Dicha beat Defence Force 4-2 to claim their maiden Ethiopian FA Cup final.

The win for Wolaitta Dicha means they will represent Ethiopia in next year’s Total CAF Confederation Cup.

After the game, the two coaches talked about their performances. Asistant manager of Defence Force, Minyamer Tsegaye said in his post match presser; “The game was good.

“The playing pitch couldn’t allow us to play our usual style of play and we couldn’t make many passes”.

“We didn’t think we would lose the cup given our performance throughout the competition. We even went ahead and squandered some good chances that could have sealed the win. It is football, so we accept the result”, he added.

The winning coach, Mesaye Teferi of Wolaitta Dicha also said;

“Since it was a Cup final, we knew penalty shootouts could happen so we worked on that”.

“Defense knocked out league champions Saint George and we also beat Ethio-Electric on penalties”, he continued.

“Both sides had opportunities to score more goals but the efforts were futile. It is a tremendous achievement to replicate what Wolaitta Tusa achieved 20 years ago. We are happy that we won the competition”, he added.

Congratulations to Wolaitta Dicha from the desk of GhanaMansports.com.
