FC Barcelona’s forward Luis Suarez is out for ‘four weeks’ with a knee injury sustained in the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup played with Real Madrid yesterday at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Barcelona lost the first leg of the Super Cup 3-1 at their own backyard and all attempts to pick something from the game proved futile as a sublime strike from Spanish U21 side Marco Asensio was the ground for a 2-0 success for the Los Blancos with the other goal coming from poacher Karim Benzema.
The loss to the Catalans was not the only blow suffered as two key players in their strides, Luis Alberto Suarez and Gerrard Pique all picked up various injuries which rule them out of the league’s opener against Real Betis.
Barcelona has confirmed that their striker Suarez will be sidelined for ‘four weeks’ due to a damage to the back of his right knee and will miss games against Betis, Alaves among others with his potential expectant date being on September 17 against Getafe.
He will however also miss his country’s World Cup qualifiers against Argentina and Paraguay at the end of August and early September.
Barcelona also announced that defender Gerrard Pique who is in his ninth season with the club has injured his abductor muscle and will miss Sunday’s game against Real Betis.
Barcelona who are looking to add some inclusions to their side have confirmed the signing of Brazilian and former Guangzhou Evergrande midfielder Paulinho in a deal worth 40m euro (£36.4m).
Paulinho was quick to say; “You have to face challenges with courage”.
“I will try to do my job and I am prepared”, he added.
“It’s a very satisfying moment”, he continued.
He concluded by saying; “The dream I have been looking for has come true. I will give everything”.
General manager of the club Pep Segura also indicated yesterday that they are close to the signing of Liverpool’s midfielder Philippe Coutinho and Broussia Dortmund’s winger Ousmane Dembele.
