The biggest surprise at the Cincinnati Masters happened yesterday in the women’s event as Australian Ashleigh Barty upset 37 year old Venus Williams in the second round.

Barty, 21 beat eight time Grand Slam champion, Venus Williams 6-3 2-6 6-2 to record her first victory over current top 10 player.
She said after the win; “It’s an honour to walk out on the the same court as Venus, to play against her and share the court with her”.
“She’s a genuine champion of the game and has, I think, paved the way for us young players coming through so to play like I did, I’m really excited”.
The win for Ashleigh Barty means she will take on Rogers Cup finalist Caroline Wozniacki in the third round.

Caroline Wozniacki eased past Russian Elena Vesnina 6-2 6-4 to reach the next stage and is one of the four players including Simona Halep and Elina Svitolina that could take top spot from current world number one Karolina Pliskova if she could go all the way in the Cincinnati Masters.

German and former world number one Angelique Kerber lost 6-4 1-6 7-6 (13-11) to Russian Ekaterina Makarova while USA’s Madison Keys eased off Russian Daria Kasatkina 6-2 6-1 to set up a clash with Spainish Garbine Muguruza.
