MADRID’S RONALDO WINS UEFA PLAYER OF THE YEAR AS BARCELONA’S LIEKE TAKES THAT OF THE WOMEN

Cristiano Ronaldo beats Lionel Messi to UEFA Best Player

Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo and FC Barcelona’s Lieke Marteens have won the UEFA Men’s player of the year and the UEFA Women’s player of the year awards respectively.

Ronaldo successfully defended his accolade as the UEFA best player and that makes it three for the Portuguese captain.

He came ahead of his main rival Lionel Messi and Juventus’ Gianlugi Buffon as he was awarded the UEFA Men’s player of the year.

Ronaldo had 438 points with Messi coming second with 111 points and then Buffon with 109 points.

The Real Madrid star man scored 12 goals in 13 matches to also win the top scorer award which ensured he made the record of scoring 100 champions league goals with two of the goals been scored against Gigi Buffon in the finals of 2016/17 season.He also scored 25 goals in La Liga as Messi won the top scorer.

Madrid best Juventus 4-1 to win the UEFA Champions League in June.

Meanwhile FC Barcelona’s Lieke Marteens also won the UEFA Women’s Player of the year ahead of her competitors ; Pernille Harder (Wolfsburg and Denmark) and Dzsenifer Marozsán (Olympique Lyon and Germany), following her amazing performances at club level last year for Rosengärd, who FCB met in the quarter finals of the UEFA Women’s Champions League, but most importantly in winning the European Championship on home soil with her native Holland.

 

In other awards, Gianlugi Buffon won the Men’s best goal keeper with Ronaldo winning the best forward award.

Luka Modric won the best midfielder and then Sergio Ramos also claimed the best defender as Madrid won their 12th UEFA Champions League title.

AS Roma legend Francesco Totti was also given the President’s award. He retired at the end of last season after his enviable 25 year stay with the Italian capital team.

The draw for 2017/18 Champions League group stage was also ‘held at the august meeting.
