In the Men’s doubles at the 2017 US Open at Flushing Meadows, British Jamie Murray and his partner Bruno Soares from Brazil are in the next stage after a straight set win over Alexander Peya and Julian Knowle.
The Brit-Brazilian pair won 6-4 7-6 (8-6) in New York as they seek to defend the title won last year to make it a third Grand Slam since the pair came together.
Murray said after the game that they need to recover quickly to win; “We did well. It was a good match”.
“There were a lot of good rallies, good atmosphere on the court – it was fun for us to play I think”, he added.
“We’re really happy to get through in two sets in the end, he continued”.
The straight sets win means Murray and Soares will take on either the Spanish pair of Pablo Carreno Busta and Fernando Verdasco or New Zealander Marcus Daniell and Brazilian Marcelo Demoliner in the next round.
In other games, Mikhail Elgin and Daniil Medvedev beat Brit Dominic Inglot and his Canadian partner Daniel Nestor in straight sets of 6-4 7-5 with Wimbledon champions Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo seeing off Neal Skupski and Guillermo Duran from Argentina 6-3 3-6 6-3.
In the women’s division, German pair of Carina Witthoeft and Mona Barthel saw off Naomi Broady and Darija Jurak 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 while Sabine Lisicki and Raquel Atawo won 3-6 7-5 6-3 against Anna Smith and American Nicole Melichar.
In the Mixed doubles; Jamie Murray and his partner Martina Hingis saw off Anna Groeneveld and Robert Lindstedt 6-1 6-4 to reach the second round.
