US OPEN WOMEN’S ROUNDUP: WORLD NUMBER ONE KAROLINA PLISKOVA SURVIVES SCARE TO REACH THIRD ROUND

Czech Republican and world number one Karolina Pliskova survived scare to reach the third round as she saw off American Nicole Gibbs in three sets.

The 25-year old beat Gibbs 2-6 6-3 6-4 to reach the third round.

Elsewhere, history was made as the longest women’s singles match in US Open history was recorded in the clash between American Shelby Rogers and Australian Daria Gavrilova .

The match lasted for three hours and 33 minutes as Rogers beat Daria 7-6 (8-6) 4-6 7-6 (7-5) on Court 19.

The American who could not hide her tears dropped to her knees and will now face Elina Svitolina from Ukraine who needed just 82 minutes to see off Russian Evgeniya Rodina 6-4 6-4 to reach the next stage.

In other games, Jelena Ostapenko from Latvia and French Open champion won in straight sets of 6-4 6-4 over Sorana Cirstea from Romania to reach the next stage while Jennifer Brady eased past Barbora Strycova from Czech Republic 6-1 6-1 in just 56 minutes at New York to qualify.

Naomi Osaka

Japanese Naomi Osaka, 19, who eliminated German and defending champion Angelique Kerber in the first round also reached the third round after beating Denisa Allertova from Czech Republic 6-3 4-6 7-5 while qualifier Kaia Kanepi also recovered from the hampered injury problems to win in straight sets of 6-4 6-2 over Yanina Wickmayer to reach the next stage.
