Honourable Yaw Osafo Marfo, the Senior Minister of the current NPP Government of Ghana, has stated that government cannot push all resources into football development.
The former Sports Minister has also explained the rationale behind his success story as a Sports Minister when Ghana qualified for the World in Germany 2006.
” I never resorted to the use of government money to support the Black Stars during our World Cup campaign in 2005.” Hon. Osafo Marfo emphasized.
“I seeked sponsorship from Barclays Bank and Goldfields Ghana Ltd to support the Black Stars, and when things were moving on well, other cooperate bodies came on board.” He continued.
Hon. Osafo Marfo was speaking on Kessben FM morning show on Thursday, when he touched on the need to promote the game to win more attention from cooperate bodies.
“Our football people must be up and doing, they have to promote the game and make it more attractive for the cooperate bodies to come and help them. Government cannot pump almost everything into football alone whereas the players would be the sole beneficiaries subsequently”.
“There are other sectors that need more attention for development other than football and we have to put more there”. Hon. Osafo Marfo concluded.
Hon. Yaw Osafo Marfo was reacting to recent comments by a section of the ‘football people’ that government should assist the running of football in Ghana as it is retrogressing in terms of finances which has also compelled players to leave at a tender stage of their career.
He was the Sports Minister during the Kuffour administration but was changed after the qualification to the World Cup 2006.
