Colombia gave the surprise of the tournament when they became victors in a 3-1 over USA in a hard-fought match that sees both teams go through from Group A at the FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017.
The match was played on Thursday night in India.
The result leaves both sides on level with six points along with group winners Ghana and the Colombians claiming the tie-breaker based on the head-to-head result.
The young Yankees came into the match as the better side with 6 points and 4 goals score but without having conceded a goal. It was a disappointing development for the Stars and Stripes, who but fell behind early on as Juan Vidal was quickest to a long throw into the box that wasn’t properly cleared.
USA equalized on 24 minutes after a super run and pass from Andrew Carleton set up George Acosta to finish in the box. Still topping the group at that stage, USA tried to hang on to the draw, but Colombia grew in strength as the match went on.
Thomas Gutierrez forced a fine save from goalkeeper Justin Garces on the hour mark, and then Juan Penaloza found the break-through with a finely taken free-kick seven minutes later.
Both teams held each other on a “bottle neck” system as none wanted to loose, and it was Penaloza again who made the difference for the third goal, this time setting up Deiber Caicedo with a cross into the box in the 87th minute.
In the other game, Ghana beat host nation, India 4-0 to go on top of the group.
