The life patron of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, His Majesty Otumfour Osei Tutu II has denied claims that he supports Hearts of Oak the rival club of his team.
Otumfour revealed this the team made up of management, players, technical staff and supporters paid a courtesy call on him at the Manhyia Palace.
Dr. Kwame Kyei’s Mandate Extension
The Asante King has also given the Dr. Kwame Kyei, the present Chief Executive Officer of the club, an extension of his mandate to an indefinite period.
Kotoko visited the team owner to present to him the MTN FA Cup trophy they won a fortnight ago after beating their eternal rivals Accra Hearts of Oak 3-1 in Tamale.
He commended the business man for his success so far after taking over the team for just a year. He went on to emphasis that Dr. Kyei has not taken any money from him since he took over and that the blessing he (Dr. Kyei) received when he was appointed is enough to see him through the management of the club. This was revealed by one of the chief linguists of the great King.
Opiemsuo Osei Tutu lamented thus ” I have heard people complaining i do not give Kotoko CEOs enough years to develop the club, thus only short term therefore I have given you the team to manage till an indefinite period so that I can have my peace of mind, you can pass by once in a while to say hello to me”.
Response on tag as a supporter of Hearts of Oak
The Asante King went on to deny that he was a supporter of Accra Hearts Of Oak.
” I knew nothing about football and I have heard people complain that I am a staunch supporter of Hearts Oak, meanwhile I was living abroad and if not for the virtue of being Asantehene, I would not have gotten so close to Kotoko and football, as I sit here I do not even know much about football rules and how it is played but Kotoko is part of the legacy I inherited and I am obliged to ensure the team achieves successes, Otumfour said.
On Players and Coaches
“I am urging the coach to ensure discipline in the team, he should stick to his guns and use players who are fit enough to play and not those who will be half fit and not give the team the needed results”, he added.
Otumfour went on to charge the playing to give up their best especially as they start preparation for the CAF Confederation Cup 2018.
He said ” I have heard you are going to play in Africa’s competition, in the past when Kotoko was going to play the likes of Englebert (TP Mazembe) it was all joy because the team was well prepared to bring back great results but now the mention of Africa sends cold shivers down the spine of supporters, you have to commit yourselves to the cause of the team because football is your chosen profession and you must ensure you succeed in it, go out there and make your families proud. Bear in mind that even if European scouts come around to watch you, playing well is the best way you can get them to sign you, so there should not be any individual play but team work and unity”.
The King advised the supporters to desist from tormenting players, management and coaches with insults and harsh words. Otumfour is quoted as saying ” I wonder why the supporters go about insulting the players, coaches and management when the team is not performing yet you do not pay anything to help the club financially, yours is to support them whether things go on well or not, go to the stadium to cheer them up during their matches”. He concluded.
