Julen Lopetegui, has been dismissed by the Royal Federation of Spanish Football after it was confirmed that he has been appointed as the new coach of Real Madrid.
This came as a result of the unexpected goodbye of French Zinedine Zidane, therefore Lopetegui will be the twelfth coach under the mandate of Florentino Pérez as president of Real Madrid.
The President of the RFEF, Luis Rubiales who confirmed the dismissal stated that, “We have been forced to dispense with Julen Lopetegui.”
As explained by Rubiales, the reason for the dismissal have been the forms that led him to make this decision after his signing as coach of Real Madrid”since until five minutes before the announcement did not know anything.” The president of the Spanish Federation was in Moscow and asked that nothing be done until he arrived in Krasnodar, but a few minutes later Real Madrid announced Lopetegui as the new coach.
Rubiales has a admitted that “it is a very complicated decision with only two days to start a World Cup”, but has reiterated on several occasions that the rules and values of the Federation must be respected. He insures “not feeling betrayed by Lopetegui “, but has insisted on saying that “it can not be that I found out about the announcement five minutes before by a phone call”.
Julian has since left the Spanish team’s camp base at Krasndar for Madrid where he is due to be unveiled by the UEFA Champions League winners on Thursday.
Spain is due to play neighbours Portugal on Friday evening in their Group B cracker. at the World Cup.
Lopetegui revealed at his departure ” I am very sad” about being sacked before the World Cup but I hope we win the trophy at the end.”
When asked how he was feeling, a visibly affected Lopetegui replied: “I’m very sad but hoping that we can win the World Cup”.The 51-year-old had little more to say other than to wish La Roja well during the finals: “My message is: ‘We have a magnificent team and hopefully we can go on to win the World Cup’ but I can’t say any more than that”.
