Ghana’s Black Queens suffered a shocking defeat at the hands of the Falcons of Mali when they lost 1-2 in the Women’s African Cup of Nations 2018. The was played at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Mali had never beaten or drwan with Ghana in their five previous games, but they came with other ideas to upset the Queens. Prior to the game, Ghana were the huge favourites to qualify for the semi-finals. The Malians had lost their first game against Camerron and came in as the under-dogs.
After 22 minutes of play in the first half, Queen’s goalkeeper, Patricia Mantey committed a penalty when she brought down Mali’s Barissa Toure. Barissa then scored from the spot to go up by a goal.
Ghana finally had their efforts rewarded after Elizabeth Addo won a penalty when she came in the 71st minute. Earlier on, a clear one had been ignored.
With hopes high up for the Queens to get the winner, the dream was short lived just after 4 minutes when the Malians scored from a goal mouth struggle as a result of a free kick by Fatoumata Diarra.
Ghana now has the last group game against Cameroon to secure qualification into the semi finals.
