Ghana’s striker Jordan Ayew was awarded man of the match on Tuesday after his wonderful display against Benin in their Group F opener of the 2019 African Cup of Nations.
Jordan scored the second goal on the evening after his elder brother Dede Ayew had given Ghana the first goal.
Ghana had to settle for a 2-2 drawn game with Benin at the Ismailia Stadium in Egypt.
The Squirrels of Benin gave the Black Stars a big scare when the scored after just 1 minute of play. The defense of the Stars failed to stop a through ball which was planted at the lower right of Ghana’s goal post by Benin’s Porte.
Captain Andre Dede Ayew equalized on the 10th minute after getting a wonderful pass from Jordan.
Thomas Agyepong had to be taken off after he sustained an injury and was replaced by Samuel Owusu after 35 minutes of play. Ghana went into recess with a 2-1 lead.
However, things changed when defender John Boys was given the second yellow card on the 57th minute for delaying to restart the game after an offside decision was given to Ghana. The red card made things very difficult for Coach Kwasi Appiah and his side.
Porte got the second goal for Benin when he smartly connected a low corner kick to the amazement of the Ghanaians.
Ghana were forced to defend in most minutes of the game as a result of Boyd’s deletion by the Tunisian referee.
Cameroon who beat Guinea Bissau 2-0 in the other group game will face the Stars on Saturday, June 29.
