Benin shock Morocco to make a historic quarter final qualification

The knockout stages of the African Cup of Nations witnessed the first surprise when Benin eliminated Morocco on penalty shoot out.

The match was played on Friday, July 5th, 2019 at the All Salam Stadium in Cairo.


The Squirrels of Benin qualified for the quarter finals with winning a match as they drew 1-1 with the Atlas Lions in 90 minutes before winning on penalties.
Moise Adilehou opened the scoring for Benin in the early minutes of the second half. El- Nesryi equalized for Morocco on the 75th minute.


The red card suffered by the West Africans was not enough to break them. They defended in numbers from the middle of the pitch to make life uncomfortable for the Atlas Lions.


Morocco’s Hakim Zeyiech failed to convert a last minute penalty to win the game 2-1.
The Atlas Lions lost 2-4 to the Squirrels on penalties to give the latter their first ever quarter final qualification.


They will next face fellow their West African Senegal at the Quarter Final stage.
