Dutch defender Virgil Van Dijk is the first defender to win UEFA player of the year after been crowned winner for year 2019/2020.
The Liverpool defender was crowned the player of the year ahead of two great personalities of the game, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The awards took place today at the Headquarters of UEFA in Nyon, France.
He was also voted as the best defender for the season in account.
Van Dijk was highly tipped after helping Liverpool to win the UEFA Champions League after they beat Tottenham 2-0 in the final.
He was instrumental when Liverpool placed second in the English Premier League and also his national side Netherlands won silver in the UEFA Nations League.
The astute defender becomes the first defender to win the award after its introduction in 2011. It was mainly won by midfielders and attacker.
