The Black Meteors of Ghana were held to a 1-1 draw by Algeria in the CAF Under 23 last round qualifiers.
Dougane Adam shocked fans at the stadium when he opened the scoring for Algeria in the first half.
Ghana equalized from the spot through Dauda Mohammed in the second half.
The Algerians appeared more organised with great team weak and frequently exploited the defensive loop holes in the Meteors set up.
Benacha Zakaria failed to convert an early chance for the Algerians as early as the 3rd minute with Kwame Baah in post for Ghana, saving the sticky situation.
After 30 minutes of action, the Algerians who had the game under control went ahead after Gideon Mensah failed to defend the ball with Adam firing past helpless Kwame Baah in post for Ghana.
Just after 8 minutes of going down by a goal, the Ghanaians were awarded a penalty when Joseph Paintsil went down in the box but captain Yaw Yeboah failed to make it count.
Ghana’s coach Ibrahim Tanko made two quick changes in the second which saw Joseph Paintsil and Bernard Tekpetey making way for Joel Fameye and Isaac Twum respectively.
With almost an hour of the game gone, Yaw Yeboah won another penalty for the Ghanaians which was then scored by Dauda.
Ghana would have to improve their game in the second leg when they go to Setif in Algeria. Qualification will pave way for the African U-23 Tournament in Egypt from which the top three teams will represent Africa at the Tokoyo Olympics in 2020.
