Lionel Andre Messi has been crowned the FIFA best player for the year 2019. This becomes his personal and world record sixth trophy after coming ahead of Virgil Van Djike and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The FIFA Gala Night took place in the Italian city of Milan. Almost all the great names produced in the game were present.
But Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo was absent when his rival was awarded his sixth best player trophy.
Leo Messi thus becomes the player to have won the prestigious award for a record sixth as he surpasses Cristiano who has five.
The two great players have dominated the awards for the past decade with Croatian Luka Modric breaking the duopoly in the 2018 edition.
The Barcelona play maker won from 2009 to 2012 before reclaiming it in 2015 and his Juventus rival also won it in 2008, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017.
Messi came second to Netherlands defender Virgil Van Djike in the UEFA best player award with Cristiano Ronaldo placing third.
National teams captains, national teams Coaches, Sports Journalists and the fans form the voters with each group getting 25% each. And Leo won 75% of the votes cast.
