UCL Round 16: City refutes scare of Monaco as Atletico wins in Germany

The fifth and sixth ties of the UEFA Champions League 1/16th stage saw Manchester City beat AS Monaco 5-3 at the Etihad with Atletico Madrid winning 4-2 at the Bay Arena at the expense of Bayer Leverkusen.

Manchester City knew they must get a respectable scoreline in the first leg if they want to progress in the UCL and started on a strong foot as Raheem Sterling put the Citizens ahead in the 26th minute. Manchester City pressed for the second but Monaco had other ideas as a sweet goal from Radamel Falcao in the 32nd minute levelled things up.

A volley from Kylian Mbbape Lottin puts the French side ahead in the 40th minute and could have extended their lead from the spot but Falcao was denied by Willy Caballero who was in post for Manchester City.

AS Monaco were made to rue their missed penalty as Sergio Aguero beat Daniel Subasic in post for Monaco with a low shot to level things up. Falcao atone for his miss and scored to put the French side ahead in the 61st minute just three minutes after City equalising to make the score 2-2.

Sergio Aguero doubled his tally and got City’s third of the night ensuring City level things up at 3-3 before further strikes from German wonderkid, Leroy Sane and John Stones ensured City won 5-3 to at least have a two goal lead going into the second leg at France in three weeks time.

The win was a revelation of Pep Guardiola’s tactical switch that saw him brought on Pablo Zabeleta to tighten things at the back. Jardim’s men was joy to watch but it was Manchester City who was phenomenal at the latter stages and duly deserve the win.

In the other game of the night, Bayer Leverkusen hosted Atletico Madrid at the Bay Arena but it was the Spanish side that run out 4-2 winners at the blast of the final whistle.

Saul Niguez put the Madrid based club infront before their starman, Antoine Griezmann doubled his side’s lead going into the break.

Karim Bellarabi pulled a goal back for the German side but Atletico added a third through the penalty spot as the fastest hattrick hero in the La Liga Santander over the weekend, Kevin Gameiro planted the spot kick at the back of the net. Bayer Leverkusen added a second to send the game 3-2.

A late goal from stalwart, Fernando Torres ensured Atlectico grabs a 4-2 win over Bayer Leverkusen going into thw return leg at the Vincente Calderon in three weeks time.

The final round of games continue tomorrow as two interesting games are up to look out for.

Leicester City will make a trip to Spain to face UEFA Europa League kings, Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez Pijuain while FC Porto will welcome Juventus in Portugal.
