Atletico Madrid may have been defeated on Sunday, but former Barcelonaand Argentina coach Cesar Luis Menotti has launched a scathing attack on the state of the Catalan team, insisting that they have been lucky to win as many games as they have.
The Blaugrana may be within touching distance of Real Madrid at the top of the LaLiga table, but Menotti believes Los Blancos deserve to be further ahead.
“Barcelona rely too much on luck,” he wrote in his weekly column for Sport.
“They keep winning without playing well and didn’t play better than Atletico, yet they won.
“The worst thing is to deservedly lose and the best thing is to deservedly win, but winning by chance is suspect.”
Concerned at their loss of identity and of control, the Argentine also criticised their over-reliance on individual magic.
“Barcelona used to be effective because they controlled the risks of a match even when being ambitious and taking the initiative,” he explained.
“Now they rely too much on individual actions.
“Every action depends much more on individual rather than on the collective execution.”
In terms of solving their problems, he admitted that it is difficult to correct the underlying concerns in the middle of the season.
“Barcelona are forced to rethink their strategies after each match, despite the victories,” he wrote.
“There is a confusion, one which is difficult to fix at a time of urgently needing results, and some resignation and sadness at the loss of their ways.”
Menotti also expressed his surprise at Luis Enrique’s decision to make a tactical switch for the Atletico challenge, even if the Asturian escaped away with the three points.
