Atletico Madrid forward, Fernando Torres is conscious and stable after suffering a head injury in Atletico Madrid’s 1-1 draw with Deportivo La Coruna at Estadio Riazor on Thursday.
The ex Liverpool and Chelsea player, suffered the injury when he fell heavily in an 85th-minute aerial challenge with Alex Bergantinos.
The 32 year old who joined his boyhood club in 2014 was unconscious and unstable after the incident but Atletico confirmed scans showed he has “no traumatic alterations or injuries”.
Atletico continued to say “Fernando Torres will remain in hospital so that he can be monitored on the extent of the injury”.
All players were scared as Torres was stretched off to the ambulance but the Spanish international released a statement saying; It was just a scare. I hope to come back very soon.”
Atletico Madrid statement on the update of Torres head injury is;
“A cranial and cervical CT scan carried out on Fernando Torres has ruled out that the Rojiblanco striker has suffered any alterations or traumatic injuries”.
“Our player, who is stable, conscious and oriented, had to be removed by ambulance after being stabilised according to the usual protocol, before entering the Model Hospital of La Coruna, where he will spend the night in observation.”
When Diego Simeone was asked in his post match presser about the injury, the former Atletico player said;
“Worried, nervous. Those are the feelings after he suffered such a heavy blow.
“We heard the blow from the bench, we saw how he fell and we were afraid. We didn’t know if that noise was Fernando’s neck or not”.
“They are unfortunate situations that happen in matches and we’re hoping for the best for Fernando.”
Deportivo’s Florin Andone capitalised on Jan Oblak poor goal kick to give the Branquiazuis the lead before a superb 68th minute strike from Antoine Griezmann leveled the scores as both sides shared the spoils. The draw leaves Atletico on 4th, 11 points adrift league leaders, Barcelona while Deportivo La Coruna remains in 17th.
