CAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE – WEDNESDAY WRAP

Matchday 2 of the CAF Champions League was wrapped up by three matches on Wednesday, with title holders Mamelodi Sundowns claiming an impressive win in the DR Congo.

Having stumbled in their opening Group C match by being held 0-0 at home by Saint George earlier in the month, Sundowns bounced back to defeat AS Vita 3-1 in Kinshasa thanks to goals from Anthony Laffor, Yannick Zakri and Sibusiso Vilakazi.

The Brazilians have joined Tunisia’s Esperance de Tunis at the top of the group standings on four points. The DR Congo side, in contrast, are bottom of the log after suffering back-to-back defeats.

In Group B, Zimbabwe’s CAPS United have brought themselves back into quarterfinal contention thanks to a 2-1 victory over USM Alger in Harare. Ronald Chitiyo scored a brace of goals as the hosts joined USMA on three points, with Zamalek topping the pool on four points.

Zanaco have moved level with Al Ahly at the top of Group D after they defeated Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca 1-0 in Lusaka. Ernest Mbewe scored the only goal of the game inside the opening quarter hour to see the Zambians to a famous victory.

Matchday 3 of the group stage of the Champions League will be played on the weekend of 2-4 June.
