FEATURE: A PERIOD OF DOMINANCE FOR JUSTIN GATLIN?

American Justin Gatlin beat Jamaican Usain Bolt in the Men’s 100m final at London.

Usain Bolt failed to win the 100m gold at the World Athletics Championship at London as he lost to American Justin Gatlin who won gold in a time of 9.92 secs.

His country mate, Christian Coleman won silver with Usain Bolt taking bronze. This is the last 100m final for Usain Bolt as he is retiring from the tracks.

Usain Bolt, 32, has dominated the individual sprinting tracks (100m and 200m) for the past decade with his first Olympic gold medal coming in Beijing 2008.

His dominance started in 2007 and has for the past decade shown that he is the best when it comes to short distances. He holds the record for both 100m and 200m with a time of 9.58 and 19.19 secs respectively.

At the time Usain Bolt is retiring, could this be a period of another dominance for 35-year old Justin Gatlin?

Justin Gatlin (born February 10, 1982) is an American track and field sprinter who specializes in the 100 metres and 200 metres events. He is the 2004 Olympic champion in the 100 metres, the 2005 and 2017 World champion in the same event, and the 2005 World champion in the 200 metres.

How it happened

Justin Gatlin who have twice been accused of doping for using a banned substance raced 9.92s to beat eight times Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt to win gold.

In his personal best of 9.74s in the 100m, Gatlin who was tagged an outsider in lane 8 but won the race in the final 10 metres to prevent teammate Chris Coleman from winning the race.

Gatlin, 35, who have been under the shadows of Bolt since 2007 bowed to the Jamaican before being hugged by Bolt in what was Bolt’s final 100m race.

Usain Bolt who is noted for 100m and 200m individual short distances opted to just participate in the 100m only at the London WAC but picked bronze after the 100m final was raced. He lost to old foe Justin Gatlin and new entrant Chris Coleman, all from America.

He has only one race to stand any chance of winning gold at his retirement tournament in the 4*100m Men’s Relay.
