4 GARRISON TENNIS CLUB CRASH GHACEM OF TAKORADI IN THE DCOP DOKU TOURNAMENT

The farewell tournament in honour of DCOP Kwasi Doku was a delightful one as 4 Garrison Officers Mess Tennis Club gave GHACEM Tennis Club of Takoradi a great competition.

GHACEM Tennis Club, Takoradi played as hosts to  4 Garrison Officers Mess tennis Club, Kumasi played  in a tournament in which was organised in honour of DCOP Kwasi Doku who had been transferred by the Government to the Ashanti region.

4 Garrison exhibited more determination to oust their guests as they recorded more wins than their hosts. In all, 13 games were played on the day with 4 Garrison dominating both the singles- winning 4-3 in the singles and 4-2 in the doubles event- which attracted a large section of the public.

Captain Wing Commander Bawah and Captain Jonathan Quartey from GHACEM and 4 Garrison respectively led the heat maps on the court the away team’s Captain Jonathan Quartey defeating the home team captain Commander Bawah 7-5. The Kumasi based club never looked back afterwards as Ghana Tennis Federation Vice President who is also a member of 4 Garrison showed his class by walloping the President of GHACEM Tennis Club 7-1. Gyakye Aidoo beat Stephen Dalighton 7-5 and Nana Yaw Wallace overcame Francis Yalley 7-4.

GHACEM club had better plans to avoid embarrassment on their home court and so gave an improved performance during the singles as Leslie Martey defeated Samuel Taylor 7-6(3). Tandoh Owusu beat Nii Quaye 7-3. John Coker won 7-4 against Kojo Akoniah.

In the doubles events, GHACEM’s Leslie/ Yalley paired up and beat George/ Ernest 7-2. Their win brought Takoradi tennis fans alive, inspiring confidence to their colleagues Achie/Roland to oust Nana Yaw/Maxwell 7-3. But their jubilation was shortlived as away team instructions from their captain Jonathan Quartey and Coach Acquah did magic for the club as Aidoo/Francis won 7-3 against Tandoh and Moses. Captain Jonathan Quartey stepped up and paired with Taylor to overcome Captain Bawah and Philip 7-5.

In other doubles matches, 4 Garrison Tennis Club maintained their winning ways with Duah and Nii beating Stephen and Twum 7-4 and Acquah/ Bright finishing it up for the away club with 7-3 win over John and Coker.

At the Dinner Dance after the tournament, the Vice President of Ghana Tennis federation, Mr. Samuel Ampedu Kyei (KyiKyis) spoke on behalf of the new Regional Commander of the Ashanti Region,  “DCOP Kwasi Doku expresses thanks for the support given to him during his stay in the Region especially honoring him with a tournament.” He concluded that he would make sure the tourney will be an annual DCOP Kwasi Doku Championship between the two clubs.
