Enner Valencia becomes 22nd Player to score opening goals in FIFA World Cup

Enner Valencia has become the 22nd player to score the opening of the FIFA World Cup. The captain of Ecuador scored all two goals for his side as they beat hosts Qatar at the Al Bayt Satdium.

Opening Goal scorers in FIFA World Cup

The 2022 FIFA World Cup got off with a glittering opening ceremony as the tournament began in Al Kor. Referee Daniel Osarto of Italy was at the centre of the game.

Valencia had hist first goal cancelled after just 4 minutes of play. The Video Assistant Referee ruled him been in an offside position before scoring. He then got the actual first goal 12 minutes later.

The second goal was scored through a header on the 31st minute. The Fenerbache striker connected to a cross from the right wing to secure the second goal for the South Americans.

He succeeds Yuri Gazinsky of Russia who got the opening goal in 2018 for the hosts. Valencia now joins 21 other players who have made this record.

Lucien Laurent was the first ever player to score the first ever goal for the FIFA World Cup in 1930.
